Linguistics misunderstanding - please help.

maybe it's a "common people separated by a common language" thing but i really don't get this.. .

many times i see somebody posting about something that irks them and they say "i could care less.

" but they use it in such a way as to infer they're not really bothered by it all.. .

I take real offense to this issue for some reason. "Couldn't" makes more sense.

I also really dislike the improper use of Your & You're.

Misuse of Their, There, & They're really chaps my hide too.

It bothers me when people say "Axe" when they mean to say "Ask".

The recent trend in the English language now that involves lazily dropping the letter "S" at the end of words. Baby Daddy, How she move, She hate me, etc.

I read somewhere, I think in a song lyric, where the vapid strumpet who wrote the song actually listed the word "Trynna" when she actually meant to say "Trying To". Ugh. I hate laziness in language.

Also, when people type "Use to" when they really mean "Used to". Same with "Suppose to" instead of "Supposed To".

"If I Could Do it, Anybody Could do it". instead of the proper "If I CAN do it, anybody CAN do it".

thinking back on some other posters' threads and experiences, combined with some things i've read on silent lambs, and adding in my own personal history, it would seem that there was/is a lot of maternal abuse going on in the jw community.. brizzzy talks about her hellishly abusive mother.. the_raisin also started a thread about her psycho mom.. my mother was an absolute diabolical tyrant.

i firmly believe that she got a sick thrill out of beating me bloody with a belt, or whatever object was at hand, from spatulas & wooden spoons to cast-iron frying pans.. it just makes me wonder if the wts's stance on women being powerless, second-class citizens has anything to do with their women lashing out violently?.

just a thought.

Wow Morbidz. Very similar to my mom. Narccissitic to the end. My grandma was nothing like that, however.

Designs, it used to disgust me that mothers would bring "weapons" to the hall to beat their kids with. I actually got up during one meeting and walked home (my parents were baffled) because one woman took her young daughter back to the second school and beat this child so mercilessly that the kid was shrieking in pain and fear. When the kid actually began to CALL OUT TO JEHOVAH FOR HELP, I couldn't take it anymore. I got into big trouble for leaving the hall too. My parents just didn't understand why i would have any problem with a mother doling out some "loving" discipline.

I can certainly appreciate an enthusiasm for bourbon. You listed Russell's Reserve. Love that stuff. If you ever run across a bottle of Bulleit (pronounced like "bullet"), give it a go. It's a bit spicier than some of it's peers. Very clean and crisp.

Johnnie Walker Gold Label was created to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of John Walker & Sons being in business. For a long time, it was only available to employees of JW&S. It was recently made public. This blend focuses on the sweeter component whiskies. It has nice notes of dried fruits, like raisins & dates, deep honey, toffee, butterscotch, & creme brulee. Absolutely decadent. The youngest component whisky in this blend is 18 years old.

Aberlour A'bunadh will indeed put hair on your chest..or make your sticker peck out. either way, this is a result of the whisky being bottled at cask strength, which generally runs somewhere between 110 and 125 proof. Also non-chill filtered, meaning that the fatty acids and esthers are left intact, maintaining the original body of the spirit. Cask strength whiskies are generally designed for the drinker to add water to their own liking.

I can't say enough good things about the Highland Park Distillery. Incredible whisky. The distillery, which resides in the Orkneys, is one of the very few distilleries that does its own on-site malting (germination & toasting) of the barley. Most other distilleries have their barley malted to order by professional malters, like Port Ellen, for example.

Were There/Are There A Number Of Gays At Bethel?

i remember the "boy's club" mentality from many of the bethelites in the 70's and 80's.

it seemed there were a number of males who were "effeminate" back in the day.. i knew of one guy that was told by the bethel brass that he would "go places" at headquarters if he could learn to deepen his voice and tone down his gestures a bit (and he was told it wouldn't hurt if he ever married a fellow bethelite sister).

this man was extensively used at conventions, became less "gay looking" and got married.. so my question is, did you see effeminate men in bethel?

This reminds me of a time when I was a bartender at a busy club in downtown Portland, OR. This quite obviously gay (and intoxicated) bellied up to the bar. It went like this:

ME: Evenin'. What can I get you?

HIM: Ooooh I dunno...*hic*...just some kind of stinky little drink.

ME: (Trying so hard not to bust up laughing). Stinky, huh? Can you be a little more specific?

HIM: Just some kind of nasty *hic* little bourbon or something...*hic*

ME: I don't know, man. It would appear that maybe you've had too much to drink tonight. I don't think I'm going to serve you anymore alcohol.

HIM: WELL THEN CALL ME A CAB, BITCH! *HIC*

ME: You're a cab, bitch.

never knowing that they may be elderly or infirmed people.

i also however try to let others in when there's a road crew ahead and everyone has to pull to one side to get by.

I try to be a good driver. I definitely don't tailgate people. I hate it when it's done to me. So much so, that if someone is riding my a$$, I will gradually slow down, even to a complete stop if necessary.

I'm right there with you. I think the pinnacle of whisky is in the form of a Single Malt Scotch.

Macallan is a great distillery. They are unique in that they use European Oak only to mature their products. Most, if not all other Scottish distilleries use primarily ex-bourbon casks from the USA, then some will finish their whisky in a European cask, such as Spanish Oloroso Sherry or Portuguese Madeira. Ex-rum cask finishing is also gaining in popularity in Scotland'

Macallan is a quintessential Speyside Malt. Whiskies from the Speyside region tend to be very light & gentle with fruity complexities. I like a good Speyside (my favorite is Cragganmore) when I just want to sip a good dram without having to put too much effort into it. When I'm in a real, robust whisky drinking mood, I tend to gravitate more toward the Islay side of things with their rich, deep peat smoke and balls-out characteristics. Some of my favorite Islay malts are, in no particular order: Lagavulin, Caol Ila, Ardbeg, Laphroaig, & Bruichladdich.

If you can give me some idea of what flavors, styles, and character that you look for in a whisk(e)y, I can certainly narrow down some really nice suggestions for you.

Whisk(e)y is a broad category with a tremendous amount of variety between styles and countries of manufacture.

Some may wonder why I spell it with the (e).

The word "whiskY" was shortened from the Irish Gaelic words "Uisce Beatha" (OO-ish-kay BAH-ha), meaning "Water Of Life". The Scots & Irish eventually shortened it to "usquebaugh", and it evolved into "Whisky" from there.

The Scots wanted to distinguish their spirit from those produced in Ireland, so they spell theirs "Whisky".

The Irish add the "e" to the end, sppelling it "Whiskey"

Canadian whiskies follow the Scottish spelling, while MOST American whiskeys adopt the Irish spelling.

Being raciest, need clarity.

growing up a witness, and having black friends and and relatives.

i was kind of in the dark as to what being a raciest was really based on.

so as i get older and think about it more, i thought it might be an interesting question to discuss what you think makes a person raciest and how they base this thinking.. i am going to use the african american racism in this example, as i think that more then any other group.

It goes both ways too. African American/hispanic/etc. celebs and comedians are always bashing white folks, but it's OK for some reason. If the situation were reversed, there would be all hell to pay.
